Scene 2

Tuco’s Lament: A Spaghetti Western Morality Play

Draft: 06/04/07

Scene 2: Python God

Setting The Scene:

This is the God Prop. It is on top of the theatre and consists of the Python God covered by two clouds which separate to show his picture. In front of this prop is a small shadow puppet of Death. It is illuminated by a single light.

Notes:

So the narrator has finished speaking. There is no music for this scene as we want the attention to remain on the voices and what is said. The theatre curtains are still open and the light dim.

The God prop remains closed and the light to this prop is still dimmed. Slowly the light that illuminates the God prop begins to rise. It reveals the God prop with clouds closed and the figure of the Devil standing before Him. The Devil is a shadow puppet that looks vaguely or much like the silhouette of Angel Eyes, large brimmed hat and that wonderful black waist coat. This shadow puppet is small compared to God but it casts a large shadow on the clouds that conceal God. Slowly the light increases which draws the audiences eyes to this prop and away from the sleeping everyman. T

The clouds begin to part. Then there comes the booming voice of The Python God. He directs Death to go to EM.

Death finishes his dialogue after he has spotted EM sleeping by the campfire. As he stops, the God prop light dims and the lights on EM raise a half notch to give the impression that the sunrise is coming but that EM is still sleeping.

As this happens the GBU music that reflexes the dream state raises for this next scene.

Note: perhaps we could have some music from The Mission soundtrack accompany this scene.

Unedited Text:

God:

I perceive, here in my majesty

How that all creatures make me darn unhappy

Living with dread in worldly prosperity

Of ghostly sight the people be so damn blind

The use the seven deadly sins damnable

As pride, covetise, wrath and lechery

Now in the world be made commenable

Everyman loves so after his own pleasure

And worse he be from year to year

He thanks not me for his pleasure

Nor yet for his being that I have lent

He be so encumbered with worldly riches

That on him I must do justice

On Everyman living with fear

Where are thou, Death, my mighty messenger

Death:

Almighty God, I am here at your will

God:

Go thou to Everyman and show him in my name

A pilgrimage he must take which he can not escape

And bring him here with a sure reckoning

Without delay or tarrying.

Death:

Lord, I will in the world go run overall

And yonder I see Everyman sleeping

Full little does he think of my coming

His mind is on fleshly lusts and his greenbacks

And great pain it shall cause him to endure

An audience before the Lord, Heaven’s King.
